N.Y. man charged in '87 murder

City police said a detainer was sent to New York today to hold a prisoner there in the murder of an unidentified drug courier whose body was found near a Pimlico school in 1987.

Homicide detective Oscar Requer said the suspect, Robert L. Robinson, 47, is in Riker's Island Prison in New York for violation of probation.

Robinson was charged in a warrant issued yesterday with first-degree murder in the slaying the Hispanic man, who police say was an illegal alien who smuggled cocaine between New York City and Baltimore.

Police said the warrant would serve as a detainer to hold Robinson in jail in New York until an extradition hearing can be held to return him to Baltimore for arraignment.

Detective Requer said the victim, a Bronx resident, was known to have arrived here from New York on Dec. 24, 1987, with a kilo of cocaine.

That same day, the detective said, the man was stabbed and shot inside a house in the 4700 block of Woodland Ave.

Detective Requer said the man was killed for the cocaine and money he was carrying.

Four days later, children playing behind the Edgecombe Circle Elementary School in the 4600 block of Lanier Ave. found the body of the man wrapped in a red blanket.

During the investigation, police learned that the victim was a New York drug courier.

However, numerous attempts by city and State Police and the FBI to identify him have been unsuccessful.

Detective Requer said information gathered shortly after the death indicated the victim had no fingerprint record on file in this country and was probably an illegal alien.

The detective said the case was placed in the inactive file and went without charges.

Last January, information was provided that eventually led police to Robinson, although it took several several weeks to fully develop, Detective Requer said.

He said the latest investigation from the January tip took him and Detective Vernon Holley to various sections of New York and nearly to Canada in putting together a case against the inmate.
