Ozzie Smith gets his 2,000th hit

St. Louis' first run in a 5-2 loss to Los Angeles at Busch Stadium last night was a milestone for All-Star Ozzie Smith, who tripled leading off the fourth for his 2,000th career hit.

Smith, 37, wiped tears from his eyes as 22,494 gave him a prolonged standing ovation. Smith is in the final year of his contract and has said he does not expect the Cardinals to sign him for 1993.

"It's probably my last season in St. Louis and it's dedicated to those fans who were cheering me," Smith said.

Smith became the 15th active player to reach the 2,000-hit mark.
