USNA Plebe sponsors sought

The U.S. Naval Academy is looking for area families to sponsor midshipmen from the Class of 1996.

This year, about 220 midshipmen from around the country will enter the academy. The academy recommends that potential sponsors live within 22 miles of the academy.

The deadline to apply is July 1. Sponsors will be notified during the last two weeks of the month. Academy officials will meet with the sponsors to answer questions Aug. 1.

They will meet their mids during Plebe Parents' Weekend, Aug. 14-16.

Family Center Workshops

The Family Center Workshops are open to active-duty military, military retirees and their families.

Unless otherwise noted, they are free and at the center. Pre-registration is required no later than two days in advance. The following program is coming to the center:

* May 28 -- Information and Vocational Counseling for the Disabled Veteran, 8 a.m. to noon. Includes "Interviewing Techniques," focusing on techniques that help with a job search, 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Squadron sponsors troop

The 1st Squadron, 158th Cavalry, stationed at the Maryland National Guard Army, 18 Willow St., sponsors an Explorer Scout troop that recently took part in the 1992 Scouting for Food Drive, collecting more than 100 boxes of food.

The Scouts are also taking the First Responders Course.

In other news, Sgt. Gregory S. Akers of Arnold recently placed third in the Supply Specialist Course at Fort Lee, Va., with a 98.6 average. He is the supply sergeant for the Headquarters Troop.

Spec. Paul R. Wade of Ellicott City graduated second in his class at the Personnel Administration Course at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. He has been assigned as the unit clerk for A Troop.
