22 student-athletes win Al Cesky scholarships

Two of Harford County's top student-athletes -- one girl and one boy -- will receive $5,000 scholarships at the seventh annual Al Cesky Scholarship Fund Awards Banquet Wednesday night at the Richlin Ballroom in Edgewood.

The event, honoring 22 male and female graduating student-athletes from all 11 Harford County high schools, begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour, followed by dinner and the awards. The 20 finalists will receive $500 scholarships.

This year's nominees are: Amy Moxey and Matt Slutzky, Aberdeen; Carly Bivens and Rob Smallwood, Bel Air; Kim Haker and Greg Cooper, C. Milton Wright; Cindy Sotaski and Ty Long, Edgewood; Tammy Kloiber and Brett Seidel, Fallston; Kimberly McCleary and Carty Ingram, Harford Christian; Betty Piner and Paul Melton, Harford Tech; Karen Romanelli and Sami Zaman, Havre de Grace; Jenny Lund and Jake Hollin, John Carroll; Jennifer Francis and Tim Miller, Joppatowne; and Valerie Phipps and Chris Kloss, North Harford.

Last year's winners were Jenny Howard of Fallston and Israel Sostrin of C. Milton Wright.

The award honors Al Cesky, a former Bel Air High football and baseball coach who later served as supervisor of physical education and athletics for the county. Cesky died of a heart attack in 1985. Soon after Cesky's death, former players, friends and associates formed the Al Cesky Scholarship Fund Inc.

The nominees are selected by their school's faculty on the basis of several criteria, including athletic achievement, academic achievement, community service and financial need.

Tickets are still available, but will not be sold at the door. Tables for 10 may be reserved. Tickets are $35 for adults and $25 for students through grade 12.
