Hopkins loses NCAA tournament opener, 4-2

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins fell behind by three runs in the first inning and eventually lost to Montclair State, 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional baseball tournament yesterday at Lackawanna County Stadium.

The Blue Jays (30-7) scored a run in the second inning when Chris McGlone singled in Scott Cade, who had walked and moved to second when Tim Monahan was hit by a pitch.

The Red Hawks (28-12-1) answered with another run in the sixth. Mike Micucci hit a one-hopper to Blue Jays pitcher Jeff Fang, who threw the ball into center field, putting runners on first and third. John Pallino, who collected three of Montclair's seven hits, then scored on a single by Tony Martinez.

The Blue Jays will try to get out of the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament when they take on Trenton State today.
