Scenic railroad slates four trips to new ballpark

CUMBERLAND -- A special train will take Orioles fans from this Western Maryland city to the Camden Yards stadium four times this summer, a happy Gov. William Donald Schaefer announced yesterday.

Mr. Schaefer, a railroad buff and Orioles fan himself, announced the special arrangement outside the Cumberland station of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which runs from Cumberland to Frostburg.

A Maryland Rail Commuter train will haul up to 500 passengers to Orioles Park at Camden Yards on June 28, July 26, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27.

The cost of a round-trip ride and an Orioles ticket ranges from $45 to $60 for adults and $39.50 to $54.50 for children under 16, depending on the stadium seat. The trip takes about 3 1/2 hours each way.

Many people who lived outside the Baltimore area had criticized Mr. Schaefer for building the stadium, and the governor used his platform yesterday to emphasize the statewide importance of such regional projects.

The announcement was one of several he made during afternoon visits to Cumberland and Lonaconing in hilly Allegany County. In Lonaconing, a sleepy town of 1,122, the governor celebrated the ongoing rebuilding of a block destroyed by a 1990 fire .

Aided by federal, state and local governments, developers are erecting a $1.5 million housing and shopping project on the fire site. The project includes 30 apartments for elderly people with low to moderate incomes and two 1,000-square-foot spaces for shops.

The building is expected to open in August, said Timothy P. Barila, with Humphrey Associates, which is part of the development partnership.

Mr. Schaefer also took time to praise three Western Maryland legislators who supported higher taxes in April. They were Dels. Betty Workman, Kevin Kelly and Casper Taylor, all Democrats. "They were subject to tremendous criticism," the governor said.
