Stress and workers

To most of 226 callers to SUNDIAL (180 vs. 46, or 79 percent vs. 20 percent), their jobs are more stressful than they used to be. Cutbacks in the workplace have increased the workload, according to 147 of 228 callers (64 percent), but 81 (35 percent) say the workload has not increased.

Changes in the workplace have harmed personal and family life for 136 of 222 callers (61 percent), while 86 callers (38 percent) say otherwise.

A study by the Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. on workplace stress and burnout says job stress during these recessionary times is destroying the mental and physical health of many private-sector workers and eroding their productivity.
