Towson State University's School of Business and Economics has received full accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
The AACSB announced that TSU had been approved for accreditation for its undergraduate business administration programs. The university offers the bachelor of science in accounting, economics and business administration.
With accreditation, TSU joins the one-third of all business schools that have met the requirements of the AACSB, which is recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency nationally for programs in business administration and accounting.
Programs are evaluated on the basis of an institutional self-study, examining such areas as mission and objectives, admissions, students, faculty, curriculum, educational innovation and technology, financial resources, facilities and equipment, and library and computer resources.
Established in 1982, the School of Business and Economics has been working toward accreditation since 1985. The school began with a reorganization from three departments -- accounting, economics and business administration -- to five departments: accounting, economics, management, marketing and finance. The school hired 55 new faculty, with doctorates in specialized disciplines.
In 1987, the School of Business and Economics instituted a screening procedure for prospective majors to enhance the academic performance level of students and to ensure that graduates were prepared to enter their career fields.
The common body of knowledge -- those courses that all TSU business students must take -- was increased from 10 to 15 courses. The program has retained a strong liberal arts and sciences foundation; 50 percent of the program includes courses outside the School of Business and Economics.
