The Odenton Heritage Society will be celebrating its first effort to acquire property by holding a "Dessert Sampler" on May 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Piney Orchard Community Center.
This landmark building, which housed Odenton's first bank in 1917, will become the home of the society and a museum to store and exhibit collections of Odenton's past.
Frank Dittenhafer, of Murphy & Dittenhafer, the architectural firm selected for the project, and the county planners who are working with the society, will share in the evening. Society members will describe what they have been up to the past two years and will have on display a sample of ongoing projects.
The Dessert Sampler will include homemade desserts donated by members.

The Gambrills Teen Club is raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The teens will be participating in a bike-a-thon from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. May 17 at Francis Station Park on the bike/jogging trail. Support the club by either riding a bike, walking, jogging or just stopping by to cheer the members on.

The Waugh Chapel Elementary School Parent Association is sponsoring a semiannual yard sale on May 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
Tables are 4-foot, 5-foot and 6-foot and cost $8, $10 and $12. Proceeds from this event will be used to purchase computer equipment for the students. A all-day bake sale will be held in the school lobby.

The First Evangelical Lutheran Prekindergarten class in Odenton very busy. Last Thursday, the morning and afternoon classes visited the Odenton Elementary kindergarten class for a sneak preview. Each preschooler was assigned a buddy and worked on books and an art project.
Today, the children went to the Baltimore Zoo. Wednesday, they will be visiting the O'Malley Senior Center to celebrate Older American Month and sing songs and present the seniors with flowers they grew.
The final activity for the school year will be on May 20 at 9:30 a.m., when the children will present a program and participate in a graduation ceremony. The graduating class will walk down the aisle of the sanctuary in caps and be presented certificates.

The next general membership meeting of the Greater Odenton Improvement Association will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Odenton Fire Hall.
The guest speaker will be County Executive Robert R. Neall, who will discuss plans for the Millersville Landfill.
The Fort Meade's Child Development Center II will hold its 21st Annual Children's Spring Carnival on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the center on Ernie Pyle Road.
Signs will be posted on Fort Meade to help you find this fun-filled event. Organizers have planned a variety of activities: children's games with prizes, clowns with balloons, face painting, pony rides and moon walk. Refreshments, such as hot dogs, chili dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, drinks and much more will also be available.
Sparky the Fire Dog and a fire engine, and McGruff the Crime Dog will be on hand. For the hungry, there's a bake sale and cake walk.
Proceeds from the carnival will help CDC II buy equipment and supplies, pay for the tuition assistance program and sponsor activities for children throughout the year.

The Fort Meade Retired Officers' Wives' Club is accepting reservations for a trip to Canada and the Thousand Islands on June 18-23.
The trip will include five nights' accommodations: two nights in Montreal, two in Quebec City and one in Guananoque, Ontario. Participants will receive five breakfasts and five dinners.
There will be a grand tour of the city of Montreal, a visit to St. Joseph's Oratory and Old Montreal and a tour of Notre Dame Cathedral.
In Quebec City, visits will include the old city, Ste. Anne de Beaupre and an evening at the Thousand Islands' Playhouse.
The group will be escorted by a Canadian tour guide, except while in the Thousand Islands. Baggage handling (one suitcase per person), taxes and meal gratuities are included in the tour cost.
For single occupancy, the cost is $685; double occupancy is $540 per person.
