Loyola will play Saturday, Navy and Hopkins on Sunday

Loyola's first-round NCAA lacrosse tournament game against Brown will be Saturday, and the Navy-Yale and Johns Hopkins-Notre Dame games will be Sunday.

The Maryland-Duke date is expected to be established today. The teams, despite counseling from the NCAA, failed to reach a decision yesterday because exam schedules conflict with the game.

Sixteen Duke players have exams Friday and Saturday. Maryland would prefer not to play Sunday because the players wouldn't have a chance to catch their breaths before the start of exams Monday.

Loyola will face Brown on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Curley Field. Sunday, Navy will meet Yale at 1 p.m. on Turf Field and Hopkins will entertain Notre Dame at Homewood Field, also at 1 p.m.

First-round games originally were scheduled for Saturday. But when state teams, as a result of the seedings, became hosts for all four, the NCAA recommended that two be played Sunday to give fans the opportunity to watch one game each day.

Saturday is satisfactory for Loyola and Brown, since both schools have exams only through Friday. Navy and Yale have exams through Saturday, so Sunday was mutually agreeable for their game.

Coach Tony Seaman said Hopkins wanted to play Saturday, but Notre Dame, because of exams, couldn't have flown in some of its players until Saturday morning. Feeling that wouldn't be fair, Hopkins agreed to a Mother's Day game.
