Pittsburgh Pirates -- Signed P Oil Can Boyd (78-77 in 10 seasons) to a minor-league contract.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Recalled OF Felix Jose from rehabilitation assignment with Single-A St. Petersburg Cardinals. Designated IF Luis Alicea for assignment to the minor leagues.

San Francisco Giants -- Recalled IF John Patterson from Triple-A Phoenix. Optioned P Gil Heredia to Phoenix.


Rockford Lightning (CBA) -- Named George Whitaker assistant coach.

Atlanta Eagles (USBL) -- Named World B. Free assistant coach.

Philadelphia Spirits (USBL) -- Will try out UMES G Simon Edwards (Towson Catholic) Friday to Sunday.


NCAA -- Named Thomas W. Jernstedt deputy executive director and Tricia Bork group executive director in charge of championships and event management. Denied an appeal from Wisconsin to overturn penalties imposed on the hockey program for the team's conduct after a loss in the national championship game.

Centennial Football Conference -- Announced its expansion to an all-sports conference to begin play in 1993-94. Renamed itself the Centennial Conference. Announced that Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Washington have joined the conference.

Loyola -- F Kristen Colberg and G Heather Abbot signed women's basketball letters of intent.

Ramapo -- Named Steve Weiss football offensive coordinator.

St. John's -- Named Brian Mahoney men's basketball coach.

Virginia -- Fired John M. Murray, men's tennis coach.


NFL -- Suspended Pittsburgh Steelers RB Tim Worley for one year for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Said the Plan B free agency period would again begin Feb. 1, 1993, instead of the proposed March 1.

Atlanta Falcons -- Signed LB Mick Thomas, LB Randy Bullock, CB Sharron Washington and OL Hosie Smith.

Cleveland Browns -- Announced the resignation of Ernie Accorsi, executive VP of football operations. Waived WR Brian Brennan, who had 315 catches in eight seasons, fourth in club history.

Dallas Cowboys -- Traded a draft choice to Green Bay for RB Keith Woodside, who started 50 of the past 64 games for the Packers.


Kemper Open -- Announced that Mark O'Meara, Craig Parry and Peter Jacobsen have indicated they will compete in the May 25-31 event at TPC at Avenel.


NHL -- President John Ziegler said he has forbidden Russian players to join their homeland's national team while the former Soviet Army team is suing the Detroit Red Wings to get Viacheslav Kozlov's contract with Detroit ruled invalid.

Nashville Knights (ECHL) -- Named Nick Fotiu, co-coach of the AHL New Haven Nighthawks in 1991-92, coach.


International Federation of Volleyball -- Announced it will consider admission application from a united federation in South Africa.
