Gerring suffers burn at Sara Lee, is stable
LPGA Tour golfer Cathy Gerring was burned yesterday afternoon when a flame from an alcohol burner shot across a buffet table as she waited in line, said officials of the Sara Lee Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
Gerring, who had just finished second-round play, was taken by helicopter to the burn unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, tournament director Clyde Russell Jr. said.
Vanderbilt spokeswoman Barb Cramer said Gerring was in stable condition in the burns intensive care unit. She suffered first and second degree burns on her face and hands, Cramer said.
The accident occurred when a chef poured more alcohol into a burner unit that had gone out.
* Congressional Country Club used a 3-0 sweep by the team of Matt and Clay Fitzgerald at the Country Club of Maryland as a springboard to a 10 1/2 -7 1/2 victory in the championship pairing of the annual team matches of the Maryland State Golf Association. The Washington pair defeated Jackie Rites-Charlie Harris.
Congressional, winning for the third time in four years and ninth overall, won 6-3 at home and split 4 1/2 -4 1/2 on the road to earn the decision. CC Maryland, the all-time champion with 10 titles lost for the fourth time (1982, 1985, and 1988) since last winning in 1972.
Matt Fitzgerlad almost aced the 182-yard 17th, then dropped a two-foot putt to close out the match. For CC Maryland, Scott Hargest, who lost his side the 15th hole when he ruled his putt had moved at address, came back to birdie the 16th and 18th holes (from three inches) to halve that nine for what appeared to be a critical half-point at that time.

San Antonio quarterback Mike Johnson threw for one second-quarter score and safety Chris Oldham returned an interception for another to lead the Riders (5-1) to a 17-14 win over visiting Birmingham (3-2-1) in a World League football game.
* Joe Howard Johnson, had nine catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns, one a "Hail Mary" from Scott Mitchell at the end of the first half, as the visiting Orlando Thunder (5-1) posted a 38-0 victory over the Frankfurt Galaxy (2-4). Johnson is on loan from the Washington Redskins, Mitchell from the Miami Dolphins.
College baseball
Jeff Banks singled home the winning run with two out in the eighth inning to give Towson State (21-16-1, 7-3) a 4-3 victory over Brooklyn College (8-14, 3-8) and a sweep of their East Coast Conference doubleheader at Burdick Field. Rob Lynch pitched a four-hit 7-1 triumph in the first game.
A five-run Towson State rally in the opener was highlighted by a two-run single from Jacen Martinez and a run-scoring triple by Steve Farling. In the second game, Rick Bagnasco had a two-run double in the first inning and Banks' game-winning single was his fourth hit of the day.
* At UMBC, the Retrievers (31-6, 9-2) extended their latest winning streak to 10 games with an East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep of Central Connecticut State (15-18, 5-5), 9-8 and 8-7. The 31 equals the school record for single-season wins. John Burns and Steve Koennel played key roles in both games. Burns hit a game-winning single in each both game and stopper Koennel got both wins in relief.
* At College Park, the University of Maryland (22-21-1, 7-12) swept Virginia (19-28, 3-19) in Atlantic Coast Conference action, 8-6 in completion of a game suspended by rain Friday, and 11-1 in a regularly scheduled game. Senior John Rayne (4-2) pitched a no-hitter in the second one, striking out three and walking none. Maryland hit three homers in the first game, and Derek Hacopian scored the winning run on an eighth inning wild pitch.
* At Salisbury, Steve Wooters' infield single scored Dave Harris to give Salisbury State (10-17) a 2-1 victory over Shenandoah (5-27) in the 11th inning of their first game. Dave Shull scored two runs and drove in two others, as Salisbury won the second game, 7-2, halted after six innings by darkness.
* Rory Conway singled home the winning run in the first game, and Joe Boan pitched a complete-game victory in the second, as Washington College (12-14, 6-4) swept visiting Widener in Middle Atlantic Conference Southeast action, 3-2 and 4-1. Keith Whiteford (Calvert Hall) went the distance in the opener.
* Gary Thomas' bases-loaded double drove in two runs to highlight a four-run second inning, as St. Mary's (9-16) stopped visiting Eastern Mennonite (11-11), 7-4. Bill Davis (7-2) pitched the seven-inning distance, allowing four hits. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.
* At Dundalk, Jeremy Benson's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning enabled Dundalk Community College (19-14) to nip Garrett CC (18-14), 1-0. Kevin Rexrode pitched a four-hitter for the winners.
* At Essex, Jeff Fry hit a two-run homer in the first and a game-winning RBI single in the seventh, as Essex Community College (20-4) edged Prince George's CC (15-9), 5-4. Fry finished with three hits and four RBI. Pitchers Jackson Edwards and Dale Lahr combined to limit Prince George's to five hits.

North Carolina State forward Bryant Feggins was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after he was shot during an argument, police said. Feggins, 21, of Winston-Salem, N.C., was sitting on a bench on the campus of North Carolina A&T; University when a man bumped into him and the two began to argue, Greensboro, N.C., police Sgt. Gary Wilson said. The man pulled out a gun and shot Feggins in the shoulder.
Women's gymnastics
Wendy Weaver, a Towson State senior competing as an individual in the all-around portion of the NCAA championships at the Civic Center in St. Paul, Minn., Friday night, scored 37.60, and failed to advance to last night's finals. Weaver, seeded fourth, was hurt by falls on the beam (9.00) and floor exercise (9.1). She had excellent routines on the vault (9.675) and bars (9.775).
Utah won the team title with a record 195.80, followed by Georgia, Alabama, and Penn State. Missy Marlowe of Utah won the all-around with a NCAA record score of 39.65.
College volleyball
Tom Sorenson had 33 kills and Alon Grinberg added 21 to help Pepperdine defeat Stanford 15-7, 15-13, 16-14 for the NCAA men's volleyball championship in Muncie, Ind.
Grinberg, a sophomore outside hitter, was named the tournament's most valuable player. Sorenson's ace capped the victory for the Wave (24-4), which won its first NCAA title since 1986 and fourth overall.
Boxing
WBO flyweight champion Jose de Jesus has been charged for the second time with selling cocaine to an undercover police agent in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
De Jesus was charged Friday with selling cocaine in the $H south-coast city of Guayama on Jan. 9. Bail was set at $150,000. De Jesus had already been in a Guayama jail on drug trafficking charges.
College crew
Harvard's varsity eight nipped the University of Pennsylvania and Navy on the Charles River to win the 57th annual Adams Cup Regatta, one of the East's top collegiate crew races. The Crimson were clocked in a fast 5:50.7 with Penn just one second behind and Navy at 6:0l.1. Navy's second varsity eight remained unbeaten (10-0) as it won in 6:01.6, beating Penn by nearly six seconds. Harvard won the freshman eight race, and Navy won the varsity four race. That marked the 33d time Harvard had won this regatta, against 13 times for Penn, including the last two years, and 11 for the Midshipmen.
* Harvard's lightweight varsity eight defeated Navy by 5.3 seconds on the Charles River to win the Haines Cup for the 11th straight year and 24th time in 26 starts. The Crimson also won the second varsity and freshmen eight races, and Navy won the varsity four race.
* At the Washington College Invitational on the Chester River, the Shoremen won the all-points trophy. Washington College was awarded the John U. Truslow Award for accumulating the most points, and also captured the Betsy Beard Stillings Cup for winning the women's varsity eight, and the Harry Ross Cup for winning the men's varsity eight.
Track and field
Butch Reynolds' comeback stalled again when he failed in a second bid to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials.
Reynolds, recently cleared to run in the United States while appealing a two-year suspension from track, won the 400 meters at the 83rd Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, with a strong finish.
But his time of 45.92 seconds fell short of the 45.80 he needed to qualify for the trials in June. He also ran 45.92 at a meet in California last weekend.
