Jessup man indicted for third juvenile rape
ANNAPOLIS--Minutes after a former roller-skating coach was sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping two of his teen-age son's girlfriends, a 14-year-old Laurel girl came forward to say the man had gotten her drunk and raped her, too.
That was in December. Yesterday, the 38-year-old former coach was indicted for sexual offenses against the girl, who had been a member of his Laurel Lazers skating team.
The girl told authorities last summer the man had threatened to kill her.
The new charges include second-degree rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.
The Jessup man's name is being withheld to protect the identities of the juveniles.
He pleaded guilty in October to two counts of second-degree rape.
In court, a prosecutor described how the man, after raping a 12-year-old girl in July 1990 in an equipment room at the Laurel Skating Center in Howard County, "called for [his 14-year-old son] and told him it was his turn."
The man admitted raping another girl, also 14.
Anne Arundel couple indicted on tax charge
ANNAPOLIS
ANNAPOLIS -- An Anne Arundel County grand jury indicted the owners of Lilly Sports Boats in Edgewater for tax evasion yesterday, charging that the couple failed to pay $42,672 in state taxes over five years.
The indictment alleges that Arthur R. Lilly, 45, and Renee Lilly, 35, collected but didn't report the 5 percent sales tax on boats they sold between February 1987 and March 1992. The married couple, who live at a marina on the Severn River, were served with a summons for a May 11 arraignment.
State Natural Resources Police seized the company's financial records last June. The raid came less than a month after Mr. Lilly, a powerboat enthusiast, allegedly led marine police on a high-speed chase across the Chesapeake Bay that a witness described as "something out of James Bond."
In an 11-count indictment, the Lillys were charged with fraudulent misappropriation of tax money, felony theft, conspiracy and making false entries in public records of the Department of Natural Resources. Mrs. Lilly was separately charged with four counts of perjury for failing to apply for Maryland boat certificates. Mr. Lilly is also charged with owning a 22-foot racing boat with a removed or defaced serial number.
