James A.C. Gray, a retired technical illustrator, died Friday during heart bypass surgery in Florida. He was 70.

Services for Mr. Gray will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Lemmon-Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, 10 W. Padonia Road in Timonium.

The former Cockeysville resident divided his time between Ocean Pines and Lehigh, Fla.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Mr. Gray came to the United States with his parents at the age of 9, settling in Quincy, Mass. In the early 1940s, he moved to the Brooklyn section of Baltimore.

During World War II, he enlisted in the Army and rose to the rank of staff sergeant, serving in the Philippines as a forward observer with the 779th Field Artillery.

After the war, Mr. Gray returned to Baltimore and worked as an illustrator in the technical publications department at Bendix Corp. in Towson.

In 1947, he married the former Wanda Stella Wenski, who died in 1975.

Mr. Gray retired from Bendix in 1982 and married the former Jane Elizabeth Norris of Laurel, who survives him. The couple moved to Ocean Pines after his retirement, spending winters in Florida.

Mr. Gray was a member of St. Paul's By the Sea Episcopal Church in Ocean City and an associate member of St. Anselm's Episcopal Church in Lehigh.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Gray is survived by a son, Bruce M. Gray of Cockeysville; a brother, Robert C. Gray of Brooklyn; and two grandchildren.
