Sports and television celebrities party for the Barcelona Olympics

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

Scores of names from the sports and TV arenas gathered Tuesday night on board the Royal Caribbean's spectacular new Majesty of the Seas, docked in New York, for a gala benefit for the U.S. Olympic team heading to Barcelona this summer.

The black-tie bash, which included a cocktail reception, dinner and dancing, also featured a Vegas-style stage show, hosted by Bob Costas and featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld, both stars of their own NBC shows. (NBC, need we tell you, is the network televising the Barcelona Games.)

Mr. Costas introduced a slew of people at the gathering, past and present Olympic athletes, William J. Hybl, president of the U.S. Olympic Committee, and a dozen or so stars of NBC shows.

But overlooked was the TV bossman himself, Robert Wright, president of NBC, who was seated dead center in the glitzy auditorium. Later in the program, an embarrassed Mr. Costas corrected the oversight, and added jokingly, "I think I've just been replaced as prime-time host of the Olympics by Jim Lampley." The audience roared.
