Meade fullback Brian Mitchell, an All-County selection, has signed with the University of Akron (Ohio), accepting a partial soccer scholarship to the Division I school.
Mitchell, 18, who led the Mustangsto the Region IV title with eight goals and two assists, said, "I got pretty lucky to get as much (scholarship money) as I did at this late stage.
"They're paying full tuition, giving me $100 toward books and paying half of my room and board."
Last season, the Zips were National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament runners-up, losing, 1-0,to Duke. The team went 15-6-1. This fall, the Zips' 17-match schedule features nine teams that qualified for last year's NCAA tournament.
"We play Indiana, Rutgers, St. John's, Penn State and Evansville," said Mitchell. "Coach (Steve Parker) said I might not start, but that I should get some playing time. They use four fullbacks and they wanted a defender who can come forward and score."
