'Shadow of Stars' at film festival

THE BALTIMORE SUN

"In the Shadow of the Stars," which just this week won the Oscar for best feature-length documentary, will be shown tonight at 9 at the Baltimore Film Festival at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

The film, by Allie Light and Irving Saraf, has been called the "Chorus Line" of opera, which pretty much describes its method. It's a series of straight-on interviews with chorus members of the San Francisco Opera, in which they describe lives of hope, fear and ambition.

It's really a fine little movie, unpretentious and humane and completely enjoyable. Even for those of us who hate opera, the movie makes it seem accessible.

Other film festival screenings: at 7 p.m. tonight, "Confessing to Laura"; at 7 p.m. Saturday, "Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One"; at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, "Proof"; and at 7 p.m. Sunday, "Thank You and Good Night!"
