Services for Ashton Schiaffino, a retired Baltimore entrepreneur, will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Trenton and Dover roads, Arcadia.

Mr. Schiaffino, who was 80, died Friday of cancer at his home in Timonium.

Mr. Schiaffino began his working life as an estate planner with the Keyser Estates in Baltimore, then as a statistician with Bethlehem Steel Corp. at Sparrows Point.

He and his wife, the former Mary Burk Evans, subsequently owned and operated a series of successful businesses.

The couple operated one of the first launderettes in Baltimore on North Avenue, simply named, Launderette.

They also ran the first accredited nursery school in Maryland, the Dickeyville Nursery School and Kindergarten, from 1945 to 1967.

The couple owned Loft's Candy and Daniels, both Baltimore import businesses, until Mr. Schiaffino's semi-retirement 12 years ago.

Mr. Schiaffino was part-owner of the Jefferson, an apartment-hotel and restaurant in Ocean City.

The couple also helped found an insurance agency in New Freedom, Pa., for their younger son, George.

He was a member of the Society of the War of 1812 of Maryland and the St. Andrew's Society of Baltimore.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara E. Eisenhart of Paris, Texas; a son, George E. Schiaffino of Glen Rock, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Maryland School for the Blind.
