THE BALTIMORE SUN

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Terry Labonte outran Ted Musgrave to lead second-round qualifying yesterday for the TranSouth 500 NASCAR stock car race.

Labonte, a former Winston Cup champion, improved from Friday's lap of 159.611 mph to 161.567, just a bit quicker than the 161.381 by Musgrave.

Labonte's second-round lap would have been good enough for eighth if he had turned it Friday.

Musgrave, who finished second to Bobby Hamilton in the 1991 Rookie of the Year battle, improved from 159.797 in the opening round.

Labonte and Musgrave will start 21st and 22nd in today's 39-car lineup, which is headed by record-setting pole-winner Sterling Marlin, who qualified Friday at 163.067.

Mark III Vans 200

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Robert Pressley drove past Harry Gant on the final lap and won the Mark III Vans 200 Busch Grand National stock car race at Darlington International Raceway.

Pressley, who earned his third career victory, was running second to Gant following the leaders' pit stops during the last of three caution flags in the 147-lap event.

Pressley, who earned a career-high $21,075, won by two car lengths, averaging 130.892 mph after leading a total of 15 laps in the race. Gant led a total of 78 laps.
