Spurs' Robinson hurt, might need surgery

David Robinson is pondering surgery to repair a thumb injury, and if the San Antonio Spurs center decides on the operation, he could be out for several weeks. For the first time in his NBA career, Robinson missed a game Wednesday night because of an injury. The All-Star center previously had played in 232 consecutive games.

"It's a day-by-day, game-by-game situation," Spurs spokesman Matt Sperisen said yesterday. Robinson, who is left-handed, suffered the injury in a Spurs loss to the Hornets last week in San Antonio when he collided with another player. The hit tore a ligament in the thumb socket of his left hand.

* The injury-riddled Los Angeles Lakers lost another key player when Sam Perkins went on the injury list with an injured shoulder. Perkins, a center-forward averaging 16.5 points and 8.8 rebounds, has had knee problems this season.

terry Hutchinson, a native of Harwood and a newcomer to match racing, was the undisputed winner in a major upset at the 26th Congressional Cup match racing regatta at Long Beach, Calif. He won both the semifinal round against French America's Cup sailor Bertrand Pace and two of three races against Spanish America's Cup skipper Pedro Campos in the final round.

The Congressional Cup regatta is commonly recognized as a significant steppingstone toward the America's Cup, and is often called the "grandfather of match-racing events."

College lacrosse

Steve Marohl set a University of Maryland Baltimore County single-season record for assists in the Retrievers' 22-3 rout of host Radford. Marohol, a senior attackman from South River High, had three goals and eight assists, giving him 44 assists for the season. The former record was set in 1989, when Ed Jackson had 43 assists. Marohl, already UMBC's career leader in assists, now has 104.

The Retrievers (6-1), who rebounded from Tuesday's loss at VMI, got another school record for goals in a quarter, as they exploded for 12 in the third.

* Joe Furnari (Loch Raven) had five goals and five assists, and Brian Sattler scored six goals to lead Western Maryland (3-2) to

an 18-11 non-conference win over West Chester.

Track and field

Mount St. Mary's junior Rob Pendergist won the decathlon at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, easily outdistancing the remainder of the 23-man field. Pendergist, who won four of five events on Wednesday, won one and placed second in two others yesterday to finish with a career-best 7,638 points. Steve Thebolt, a 1991 Rutgers graduate, finished second with 7,008 points.
