As we get into another batch of questions without answers, let me first commend the near 100 of you who applied for the 10th annual Anne Arundel County Sun Academic-Athletic Team.
It won't be easy getting the team down to 12 boys and 12 girls to be honored at a banquet onTuesday, May 5 at the BWI Marriott. The event is the highlight of the Anne Arundel Trade Council Spring Membership Dinner.
The 24 student-athletes chosen will be announced within a couple of weeks right here in the Anne Arundel County Sun.
Now let's get to those "Q's without A's," sports fans.
* Don't John Moore and the people with the Glen Burnie youth baseball and softball program have a marvelous idea of finding a place to play for the 16-and-under girls who don't make county select softball teams?
The best girls softball is played in Anne Arundel County, and with so many outstandingplayers here, there simply is not enough room for everybody to play select ball.
"We've been talking about starting an intramural-typeprogram for the girls who get cut from select teams," said Moore, who is one of those full-time youth sports volunteers.
"We're tryingto find a place for them to play and will concentrate on the 14-16-year-old girls. We came to the conclusion that there is no place for these girls to go when they don't make the select teams."
For information on this new softball program, call Moore at 760-6472 or Jeff Williams at 768-9363.
* Is it any wonder the Severna Park High football team didn't make the playoffs last fall and the basketball team didn't win the region considering that at least three of their best players -- Gerald Cager, Matt Glenn and Ron Green -- are better suitedfor the stage?
Seriously, did you know that Cager, Glenn and Green are great singers and performers?
No fooling. I caught this trioin the Severna Park High School Rock 'n' Roll Revival III Friday night. The event is a wonderful idea for a senior class fund-raiser, andthe football trio stole the show.
Cager's rendition of James Brown's "I Got You" was one of the evening's highlights. The 6-foot-5 Cager could give the Godfather of Soul a run for his money in a dance contest, and he sings pretty well, too. Glenn is smooth, and Green has a great voice. This is a pretty talented threesome -- and excellent athletes too.
* Have you heard that Severna Park hoop coach Wayne Mook, who is now the Falcons' head softball coach, has a new navy blueblazer?
"We presented Mr. Mook with a new navy blazer and gold hanky at our winter sports banquet because we felt it was time for a change," said Nina Tate, the hoops team manager.
Mook has worn a green blazer to most of his games for the last decade, and in the opinion of some, has outgrown that jacket.
"You've (yours truly) been kidding him about that jacket for a long time, and it's become a joke around the county," said Tate. "So, we thought we would get him a new one."
But the question is, will Mook be back as boys hoop coach atSeverna Park?
* Did you know there may be a lot of high school hoops changes for next season if a couple of guys leave certain places?
Broadneck may have to look for a new coach if Ken Kazmarek gets the Anne Arundel Community College job. Kazmarek has applied for the vacant Pioneers job along with former St. Mary's and Loyola College star Kevin Carter and Northeast girls coach Calvin Vain.
Mark Amatucci resigned at midseason and was replaced on an interim basis by assistant Mark Healy. Amatucci reportedly is looking into the Navy job.
Annapolis coach John Brady also is interested in Navy. So, how's this scenario?
Kazmarek lands the Anne Arundel job over Carter or takes an assistant's job to Brady at Navy. Old Mill coach Paul Bunting moves to Broadneck, and Gerald Moore leaves Arundel to replace Bunting at Old Mill.
Bill Zucco comes out of retirement and returns to coaching Arundel, while Tom Kraning splits Chesapeake to coach Annapolis. Kraning resides in Annapolis and just coached the North senior stars to victory on Sunday in the Tom McMillen Capital-Gazette All-Stargame in the Cap City.
John Barbour then moves up from Class 2A Northeast to 4A Chesapeake with Vain, who once assisted Brady at Annapolis, switching from the girls to the boys at Northeast. Lynn Pitonzo gets bored with winning state softball championships and coaches the Eagles' girls hoop team to a state title.
And how about Terry Bogle leaving Glen Burnie to become athletic director at North County with Mike Baker relinquishing that job to return to coaching? Baker takes over the Knights' program with Brad Wilson stepping down.
Longtime assistant Mike Rudd or Max Powers replaces Bogle.
Speaking of Bogle, why do the county coaches entrust him with calling the media about the Dick Hart Award? Bogle didn't call anybody after last week's vote made Josh Gannon of Annapolis and Kim Smith of Southern the recipient of the awards in honor of the late Andover/North County coach.
Can you believe the Board of Education has yet to hang up the DickHart plaques from last year, using the excuse they haven't found a place for them?
Do those people in the ivory towers on Riva Road know how high a regard the coaches had for Hart? * How many of you remember the Baltimore Express 14-and-under boys hoop team that ex-NFL player Wayne Fowler took out to Las Vegas in August of '89 for a National Amateur Athletic Union tournament?
Well, how's this for the kind of talent Fowler, who now assists Jim Doyle at Severn School, developed? The following high school varsity stars played on that youth team: Brad Fowler (Wayne's son) and Jamand Mack, who led Severn to the Maryland Scholastic Association C Conference finals; Ron Green and Craig Dorsey of 4A Region playoff team Severna Park; Damon Cason, The Baltimore Sun All-Metro from Southern of Baltimore; Erik Sheppard, catalyst of Old Mill's first-ever 4A Region IV champion; Rob Miller and Shawn Moyer of North County; and Greg Metricko of Calvert Hall. Fowler, Mack, Cason, Metricko and Green all return next season.
