Towson seeks ECAC women's championship

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Towson State, ranked No. 10 in the nation in gymnastics, is favored to take its sixth straight ECAC women's championship Saturday at New Hampshire. It is an important steppingstone for coach Dick Filbert's team, which next month will try to advance to the NCAA championships for the second time in three years.

The Tigers completed the regular season with a 190.20-190.10 victory at Kentucky, with Missouri third at 189.15. It was the sixth straight meet in which Towson State scored more than 190 points, testament to the Tigers' improved depth this season. The school record entering this season was 189.55.

Wendy Weaver, a senior from Newark, Del., continued as the Tigers' top all-around gymnast at Kentucky. Her 38.50 score edged teammate Wendy Chalmers' 38.15. Weaver will be seeking her fourth straight ECAC all-star recognition and her first individual title since 1989.
