Head coach: Gloria Day (third year).
Assistant coaches: Corrine Winegrad and Gayle Gregson.
1991 record: 1-17.
Returnees: Seniors Jenny Trumbauer (SS), Leeta White (1B-3B), Nikki Finkelstein (LF) and Jenny Mauch (P); juniors Allison Dacey (C-P) and Jenny Enriquez (C-P); sophomores Brandee Olinger (2B), Uyen Do (SS-3B), Jaime Hennessey (CF) and Jenee Smith.
Newcomers: Sophomore Shannon Henderson (RF); freshmen Janelle Queen (C), Emily Nugent (3B-SS) and Avese Hillard (OF-P).
Coach's outlook: "We still have lots of little rough spots to smooth out, but overall I'm pleased with our progress. Things look promising. Last year, we only had two subs on the whole team, and this year we have four, sothere is a little bit more depth. Our freshmen are going to need some grooming. They aren't used to playing fast-pitch. If I can just keep everyone's heads in the game, and as long as everyone does the bestthat they can possibly do, that's all I can ask of them."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The Panthers are still awfully young and still rather inexperienced compared to most of the teams in the county. The safest prediction for this group is that somehow, someway, they will find a way to win at least one game.
SPALDING CAVALIERS
Head coach: Jim Nemeth (second season).
Assistant coach: Ron Chin.
1991 record: 18-1, Baltimore Catholic League regular-season and tournament champions.
Returnees: Seniors Kim Sheridan (P), Amy Councilman (2B), Jen McKeldin (C) and Michelle Chin (OF); juniors Carrie Lycett (1B), Kelly Mabe (3B-SS), Amy Povoloski (OF) and Kelli Fickes (OF);sophomore Rachel Synowski (SS-P).
Newcomers: Junior Lisa Laumann (OF); sophomores Kathleen Legg (OF-3B) and Carrie Parsons (DH-IF).
Coach's outlook: "We want to win the regular-season and Catholic League tournament titles, go undefeated and aim for a No. 1 ranking. I really think we have the talent to do just that. We have a good mixture of kids. We have a good number of experienced seniors and a lot of young talented kids coming up. When Kim Sheridan is on, she's unhittable. Our players just have to stay focused on every pitch, every game."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Sheridan has done it before and she will do it again. Watch as the Cavaliers sweep Catholic League honors and don't be surprised if they go undefeated in spite of theirdifficult schedule.
ARUNDEL WILDCATS
Head coach: Don Banks (fourth year).
Assistant coaches: Paul Yannuzzi and Jerry Stallard.
1991 record: 7-10.
Returnees: Seniors Michelle Harrison (1B), Tara Beauchemin (SS), Pam Phipps (3B) and Tina Deal (Util); juniors Traci Koenig (P) and Heather Daffin (C); sophomores Kim Humelsline (2B), Heidi Motzer (2B) and Loren Bausell (LF).
Newcomers: Juniors Virginia Gonski (Util-P), Amy Willis (P-Util) and Brit Erslev (OF); sophomores Christine Plumb (OF) and Michelle Fowler (IF); freshmen Christy Covington (OF) and Amanda Hall (3B-IF).
Coach's outlook: "This year I'm looking for my first winning season. So far, everything is shaping up, and the team chemistry is good. The potential to have a good season is there. Our hitting is suspect, but it's improving compared tolast year -- they're making more contact, which is a good start. I think our pitching and defense will be improved, and our depth isn't too bad overall. The girls are really excited about the season, and having Paul Yannuzzi around is a great plus."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: If normalcy prevails, Arundel probably will fight it out with Broadneck for third in the Bay Division behind Northeast and North County. The Wildcats will have to lean on the bats of Koenig and Daffin in order to top the .500 mark.
BROADNECK BRUINS
Head coach: Bruce Springer (first season).
Assistant coaches: Steve Chapman andPaul Nissenmeyer.
1991 record: 7-11.
Returnees: Seniors Ava Tasker (SS), Holly Mowry (C), Jen Jasick (OF), Nikki Green (OF), RachelSassi (IF) and Jen Raspowski (1B); junior Kristen Weaver (OF).
Newcomers: Junior Dana Brittle (2B); sophomore Kristen Butner (P).
Coach's outlook: "We want to improve every time we go out on the field. In every game, we want to get a little bit better. We want to try to eliminate mental mistakes. Everybody is going to make a physical mistake, but you want to eliminate the mental ones. If we do that, we feel we might be in most of these games that we play. I'm more or lesstaking the same approach that I do in basketball, and that's teach the basics and the fundamentals, and then the rest hopefully will come. And I guess that will probably take time."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Don't count on Broadneck making a miraculous turnaround simply because Springer is at the helm. While he's a proven winner on the basketball court, it's too much to expect him to have these Bruins in the playoffs right away. As he said, it will take time. But if Butner can throw strikes and move the ball around, the Bruins will be competitive.
CHESAPEAKE COUGARS
Head coach: Dennis Thiele (eighth season).
Assistant coaches: Lin Sullivan and William Lewis.
1991 record: 21-3, Class 4A state champions.
Returnees: Seniors BeckyTheile (1B-2B), Kristin Spak (RHP) and Jeanne Coltrane (OF); juniorsStacy Necessary (OF), Natalie Black (C-OF), Tracy Starke (OF), NancyYeager (3B); sophomore Jaime Long (SS).
Newcomers: Juniors LaurieMike (OF), Michelle Arch (1B), Danielle Caldwell (OF) and Lori Congdon (P-2B); sophomores Michele Manner (IF), Kim Woody (OF).
Coach'soutlook: "I'm looking first of all to make it back to the playoffs, and that's going to be a task in itself. This year I'm going to need to utilize my speed more than my power. We have a couple of kids who are unproven at the plate. They may come through in a fine fashion. If that's the case, we'll be back to the playoffs. I have all the confidence in the world they can come through. In past years, we were sure shots for the playoffs, but this year, we don't expect to walk right into it. But our team is aggressive and spunky, so you never know what can happen."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: With no wizard on the mound this season, Chesapeake is going to need larger offensivecontributions if it expects to repeat as state champions. Look for the Cougars to go as far as their bats will carry them.
GLEN BURNIE GOPHERS
Head coach: Bob Broccolino (13th season).
Assistant coaches: Don Dzambo and Rob Shaver.
1991 record: 16-4, lost to Chesapeake in 4A Region IV finals.
Returnees: Seniors Heather Smith (SS), Erin Sutton (CF), Stacey Jordan (P-OF), Dora Taylor (LF), Carrie Lippert (RF-DH) and Janine King (C); juniors Becky Lanham (1B) and Lori Hagedorn (3B-OF).
Newcomers: Junior Jessica Pearce (3B); sophomore Crystal Ford (1B); freshmen Samantha Miller (P-2B), Denise Warren (OF-IF), Jen Stapler (C) and Susan Croedel (OF-SS).
Coach's outlook: "It's going to be very, very up and down because of the inexperience.Even though we have all these seniors, they may not all be playing alot. The season is going to be a question mark, but I think by the year's end we'll be fighting for that last playoff spot. Our inexperience is going to show at times, but they're willing to work hard and they're a nice group of kids. We'll hustle and we'll play good defenseand, hopefully, won't make too many inexperienced plays. We'll be there."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Look for Glen Burnie, led by Smith and Sutton, to gain a playoff berth. The key is how well Jordan adapts to her new full-time role of pitcher. Sure, this group is young in spots, but also talented enough to compete in the regionals.
MEADE MUSTANGS
Head coach: Sam Pandullo (seventh season).
Assistant coaches: Molly Wilson and Joyce Wills.
1991 record: 3-15.
Returnees: Seniors Sherri Walker (3B), Heather Pandullo (C), ChristelMarks (1B), Melissa Bender (1B-2B) and Shannon Hadden (OF).
Newcomers: Junior Marlena Amorin (OF); sophomores Terry Frelolichowski (1B), Jessica Howard (OF) and Heather Mallonee (IF); freshmen Lisa Becker (P), Joslyn Frobish (IF) and Jen Everett (IF).
Coach's outlook: "Our (practice) field has been in terrible shape, so we've just started working outside. We've been looking rough so far, so things can only get better from here. I think we'll be better this year, but how good? Who knows? We are really, really young all-around. Anything can happen. And with our youth, we're just looking down the road. Hopefully, we'll win more than last year. I'd like to win five or six, if possible. I think we can do it."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: With the likes of Friendship Division opponents Chesapeake, Severna Park, Glen Burnie and Old Mill, the Mustangs can only hope to beat up onpoor Annapolis to get a third of the way to Pandullo's goal of six wins. Becker will be tested during her initial varsity season on the hill. Once again, it looks as though Meade will be one of the more bruised and battered 4A teams in the county.
NORTH COUNTY KNIGHTS
Head coach: Sue Fitchett (second season).
Assistants: C. J. Holler and Joe Kisser.
1991 record: 12-6.
Returnees: Seniors Karen Hay (P), Lisa Garrison (C), Tonya Kolodziejski (CF-1B), Tina Armstrong (3B), Kim Horney (C) and Cheryl Tomshack (2B); juniors Kristie Rhinehardt (P-RF), Nicki Faulkner (CF) and Nadine Slavin (SS-OF).
Newcomers: Seniors Alice Newton (Util.) and Kris Godfrey (Util.); juniors Brandy Weidner (OF-P) and Jeannette Merrick (Util.); sophomore Leanne Jones (IF); freshman T. C. Horney (SS-OF).
Coach's outlook: "We endedlast year on kind of a disappointing note, but the girls learned a lot and they're eager to get a good start on this year. We feel prettygood about this year's team. A great confidence booster that would also put last year behind us would be to beat South River in our firstgame. We need to come together and to maintain good team chemistry."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The Knights have seven returningstarters from last year's squad, in addition to a solid corps of players up from a .500 junior varsity squad. Hay is back after an 11-5 season on the mound, and the Knights also return their top batter, Armstrong. Look for North County to reach the playoffs, contending with the likes of Chesapeake, Severna Park and Old Mill.
NORTHEAST EAGLES
Head coach: Lynn Pitonzo (14th season).
Assistant coaches: EarlDundorf and Ron Price.
1991 record: 19-3, Class 2A state champions.
Returnees: Seniors Stacy Reynolds (P-2B), Rae Ann Detrey (C-1B-2B-OF), Shannon Mcaugey (3B-SS) and Jen Vickery (OF-1B-C).
Newcomers: Juniors Velvet Farrell (C-OF), Robin Konrad (OF), Jen Delsignore (OF), Dawn Fish (OF-1B-3B), Melissa Ginevan (OF) and Jackie Celuska (OF); sophomore Loren Bailey (P-C-1B); freshmen Beth Benner (P-2B) andJen Johansen (SS-3B).
Coach's outlook: "I don't see any signs of the kids feeling any pressure. The fact that the kids are working really hard, I think that will yield positive results. Obviously we won't see the success of the past two seasons, and if we get through the county, we've got Damascus in our region this year."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Pitonzo's youthful Eagles squad will be greeted first by a tough county league schedule. And if it's fortunate to reach the playoffs -- which it should -- it'll have an even tougher time getting out of Region III. To reach the final four, the Eagles will have to face last year's Class 2A state runner-up Damascus, whom they had a difficult time beating, 1-0, a year ago. Most of the starters return for the Hornets of Montgomery County, but just one full-time starter is back for Northeast.
OLD MILL PATRIOTS
Head coach: Lori Darnell (first season).
Assistant coaches: Tom Schiltz and Jo Funk.
1991 record: 13-7, lost to Chesapeake in 4A Region IV semifinals.
Returnees: Seniors Jennifer Bostak (P-SS), Jennifer Schmittle (P-OF) and Sarah Storrs (C-1B); juniors Lori Lynch (C-CF), Karen Jacobson(P), Amy McKenzie (3B), Maryte Uleckas (OF) and Christine Baer (SS).
Newcomers: Juniors Michelle Meredith (OF), Melissa Maisch (C), Sally Schummer (OF), Anne Stevenson (1B), Tracy Kaszuba (SS-1B), Christine Zellers (2B) and Cindy Parulis (2B).
Coach's outlook: "So far,it looks good. With the veterans we have, and the attitude they havegoing into the season, and the talent, it looks good. We're real deep in hitting, and we have girls who can bunt, as well as hit. We've got players who can play two or three positions, so we'll have a lot of juggling to do to figure out who plays where. The playoffs certainly are a goal of ours, and anything beyond that would be nice."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: While other coaches fret over pitching,Darnell has three talented arms to choose from. This team is deep and experienced, despite possessing only a few seniors. The Patriots should bang out plenty of hits, while holding the opposition at bay. Old Mill has a legitimate chance to break Chesapeake's stranglehold on the 4A League.
SEVERNA PARK FALCONS
Head coach: Wayne Mook (first season).
Assistant coaches: Chris Carver and Doug Popely.
1991 record: 14-5, lost to Glen Burnie in 4A Region IV semifinals.
Returnees: Seniors Alicia Conine (1B-OF), Wendy Snyder (2B), Jill Natwick(C), Kerri Schmale (OF), Lana Boarman (OF), Dana Gosewisch (OF) and Georgia Kootsikas (IF); juniors Carrie Schiavone (OF) and Christine Winters (3B); sophomore Jen Spampinato (P).
Newcomers: Sophomores Melissa Weed (SS), Amy Schlegel (SS) and Carrie Budzinski (1B-OF).
Coach's outlook: "I'd be surprised if we didn't do very, very well. Ithink the kids expect it, too. They want to go out on a high note. We expect to hit the ball. Opposing pitchers are going to have their work cut out for them. This is one of the most talented teams I've seen. I don't think I've had as many talented basketball players on one team as I have with this group of girls. I have 14-15 kids, and any one of them could start. That's just unbelievable. The outlook's good."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: No wonder Mook is so enthusiastic about the coming season. The lineup -- whichever one he chooses --will be filled with big bats, and with a hurler like Spampinato, it won't take many runs to win. It would be a major surprise if Severna Park doesn't make the playoffs.
SOUTHERN BULLDOGS
Head coach: Marti Woodfield (second season).
Assistant coach: Greg Phillips.
1991 record: 3-15.
Returnees: Seniors Jennifer Bush (P) and Lena Nuckols (SS); juniors Michelle Boerckel (3B), Karen Jameson (OF), RachelLee (IF), Amy Manifold (IF) and Christy Padgett (C); sophomores Tonia Nuckols (IF-1B) and Lisa Moore (OF).
Newcomers: Sophomore Lisa Biederman (IF); freshmen Stacy Cleek (IF), Amy Disilvestre (OF) and Jenny Padgett (OF).
Coach's outlook: "We've got seven starters back, but our talent is difficult to gauge -- I'd say it's average. But with all that's coming back, I know a little more of what to expect. Last year, they were getting to know me and I was cold, so last year's varsity experience should help. Their skills didn't need to be toned as much. This year's schedule is a little more difficult because we don't get to play two of the teams (Atholton and Wilde Lake) that we beat."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: In any other county, the Bulldogs would be a shoo-in to surpass last year's record. In this county, however, they'll be fortunate to do that. That in itself is a realistic goal for this young team with two starting seniors. The Bulldogs and Coach Woodfield are still a year away from developing into a bona fide playoff contender.
SOUTH RIVER SEAHAWKS
Head coach: Don Leonard (first season).
Assistant coaches: Bill Huff and Jim Groninger.
1991 record: 8-10.
Returnees: Seniors Renee Howard (SS) and Mandy Loftice (LF); juniors Erin Early (CF), Diana Niland (3B), Terra Selby (C), Koren Fry (2B) and Wendy Kapps (3B).
Newcomers: Senior Michelle Freihofer (C); junior Sandy Hull (SS); sophomores Amy Henshaw (1B), Mandy McLaughlin (P), Lindsay Pell (P), Amy Perry (OF) andMarj Callaghan (OF); freshman Cassidie Dunbar (LF).
Coach's outlook: "For several different positions, it's been very competitive among the girls in practice. I'm probably only going to be starting one senior. This is a young, exciting and very enthusiastic group. But we've lost to the four Howard County teams that we played last year, so as far as our schedule, we're in against the lions. I think .500 would get us into the playoffs, and if we do (make the playoffs), you could see a real surprise. They've got a winning attitude."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Although he is returning six starters from a team that went 8-10 for the second consecutive season and a few solidprospects up from last year's 11-7 junior varsity squad, Leonard is careful not to be overzealous. The Seahawks are aiming for a .500 record, which should get them into the playoffs.
