The average cost at county grocery stores in February for a basket filled with 21 items was virtually unchanged from the price in January.

The average price in January was $28.26, as compared with $28.21in February.

The U.S. city average for the same items in February also was virtually unchanged from January and was 52 cents higher than the countyaverage.

Each month, The Carroll County Sun collects prices for 21 grocery items at county stores.

The prices listed in today's chart were collected on the same day in February at Giant Food, which has a store in Westminster; SuperFresh, with stores in Eldersburg and Westminster; Weis market, with stores in Hampstead and Westminster; and George's IGA, with stores in Eldersburg, Finksburg and Woodbine.

Beginning next month, prices from Martin's Food Market, with stores in Westminster and Eldersburg, will be added to the chart.

Also next month, sale prices of items will be noted.

Prices for the U.S. city average and the regional average are collected by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics in Philadelphia. Regionalnumbers are for the South, which includes Maryland.

The bureau chooses a mixture of name brands and generics and collects prices once a month at thousands of stores across the country, regional economistMaureen McDevitt Greene said.

Prices for February were available last week.

In Carroll, the price of the grocery basket ranged from$26.43 at George's to $30.80 at Giant.

The average price for fouritems in the county was unchanged from January to February. The items were: 1 pound of bananas, 1 pound of stick margarine, a 5-pound bagof sugar and 1 pound of bone-in chicken breast.
