Garth Brooks nominated anew
Garth Brooks has won yet another nomination for an Academy of Country Music award -- this time in the video category.
Mr. Brooks, 30, was nominated Monday for the video "The Thunder Rolls." He's already up for entertainer of the year; best male singer; best single, "Shameless"; and best album, "No Fences" and "Ropin' the Wind."
Hopkins' Hannibal wins sci-fi award
Anthony Hopkins, 56, won best actor honors at the 18th annual Saturn Awards for his devilish portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs." The award is presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.
The serial killer drama won four awards at the ceremony Friday, finishing second to "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," which won five.
The robotic star of "Terminator 2," Arnold Schwarzenegger, received a lifetime achievement award.
Haley estate faces claims
Claims totaling $238,143 have been filed against "Roots" author Alex Haley's estate.
Mr. Haley died Feb. 10 in Seattle of a heart attack. One claimant, the N. J. Ford & Sons Funeral Parlor Inc. of Memphis, Tenn., filed a bill of $38,491 for handling the funeral. Charges include $18,759 for an African mahogany casket and $2,500 for a copper liner.
George Wallace enters pain clinic
Former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, 72, was reported in satisfactory condition at a Birmingham hospital yesterday after being admitted Monday for tests for the chronic pain he's had since he was shot 20 years ago.
Mr. Wallace was to undergo a week of tests at the pain clinic at University Hospital.
Kuwaiti marriages: for love or money
Kuwait has upped the ante for eligible men. Trying to boost its tiny population of about 2 million, the country is offering young men $14,000 each to marry.
The amount, approved by the Council of Ministers, is double previous sums offered to men marrying Kuwaiti women.
British stars get in on the election act
British political parties have deployed celebrity power in their campaign for a general election April 9.
Actor Sean Connery, 61, stars for the Scottish National Party, which seeks independence for Scotland. Prime Minister John Major's Conservative lineup includes composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, actor Sir John Mills, 84, and javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson. And Labor's talent is led by Oscar-winning actress Glenda Jackson, 55, who is a candidate for a London constituency.
