ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Storm Davis is listed as "day to day" after leaving Friday night's game with an inflammation in the arch of his left foot.

If Davis is unable to take his regular turn Wednesday, Dennis Rasmussen will move up a day and take his place. That would put the veteran left-hander in position to assume Davis' spot in the rotation if necessary.

Davis, who described himself as "sore" yesterday, has had trouble with his foot all spring, but Friday night was the first time he had to curtail activity. He left the 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers after retiring his first four batters.

For Rasmussen, a non-roster invitee to camp, injuries could be a determining factor in his attempt to make the club. It's not the ideal situation, but the 33-year-old veteran realizes it could be an opportunity.

"I feel bad for him [Davis]," said Rasmussen. "The way I look at it, we're all in this together. But I really don't pay any attention to what's going on.

"I just look forward to pitching when it's my turn. That's the part I can control."

Manager John Oates has said all spring he was looking at Rasmussen strictly as a starter, but there is also a possibility he could fit into the picture as a reliever. With Jim Poole behind schedule because of a tender shoulder, Mike Flanagan is the only left-hander in the bullpen who has worked on a steady basis.

Rasmussen pitched three innings yesterday and wasn't as effective as he had been in his two previous starts, but the outing won't hinder his chances. He was charged with three runs -- two unearned -- and gave up three hits in three innings as the Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals, 6-3.
