After staging his first championship match last month, local boxing promoter Stuart Satosky will return to a club fight format, April 15, at the Pikesville Armory.

Baltimore welterweight Eddie Van Kirk (24-7,12 KOs), who scored a last-round knockout of Jose Torres in the semifinal to the Vincent Pettway-Gilbert Baptist title fight last month, will headline the show against Edwin Curet (26-11, 11 KOs) of Boston.

Most of Curet's losses have come against former champions or top contenders such as Greg Haugen, Livingston Bramble and Johnny Duplessis. Van Kirk hopes to use this fight as a springboard for a World Boxing Organization title bout.

In a companion 10-rounder, Baltimore cruiserweight Lou Benson (18-9-2, 9 KOs), "the Fighting Sheriff," will battle slugger Jamie Waller (11-4-1, 9 KOs), of Stafford, Va. Waller is ranked No. 14 by the IBF.

Promising Rockville middleweight Les Johnson (13-1, 10 KOs), who looked impressive in stopping William Galliwango last month, is matched against Timmy Knight (6-4), of Norfolk, Va., in an eight-rounder.

Johnson, a rangy 160-pounder with an explosive right hand, is developing a strong following in the Baltimore area.

NOTES: Pettway is ranked No. 2 in the IBF's latest junior-middleweight rankings. That represents the highest ranking of a local fighter in more than 30 years. Gianfranco Rosi, the champion from Italy, will defend his title against top-ranked Gilbert Dale, of France, this summer, with Pettway waiting to challenge the winner.
