A 28-year-old South Baltimore man was listed in serious condition today at the regional burn center after his girlfriend allegedly set him on fire as he sat in a chair watching television after an argument with her, police said.

Homicide Detective Edward Burns said the victim, Glenwood Edwards of the 500 block of Otterbein St., and his girlfriend, Elva Bennett, 31, of the same address , had been arguing most of the evening after Mr. Edwards got off from work.

Around 11:30 p.m., he sat down to watch television.

Detective Burns said Ms. Bennett reportedly got angrier at Mr. Edwards for not continuing the argument.

Then she allegedly poured the contents of a bottle of rubbing alcohol over Edwards and lighted a match.

Mr. Edwards sustained second-degree burns on his chest, shoulder, arms and neck, the detective said.

After Mr. Edwards doused the flames, Ms. Bennett called police and requested an ambulance, the detective said.

After treatment at the house by paramedics, Mr. Edwards was taken by ambulance to the burn unit at the Francis Scott Key Medical Center, where he was admitted.

Ms. Bennett, who was arrested at the scene, was taken to the women's detention center. She was charged with assault with intent to murder and assault by maiming.

Police said Ms. Bennett was held pending a bail hearing today before a District Court commissioner.
