It didn't matter that Frederick center Angie Davis wasn't wearing a red "S" on her jersey last night. The 6-foot-3 senior was the main reason the Lady Cadets were able to leap No. 16 Dulaney in a single bound.

All night long, Davis went up, with 22 points, 16 rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocks, to help beat the top-seeded Lions, 52-42, in a Class 4A, Region II semifinal.

"I don't know what else we could've done," said Dulaney coach Elaine Lindsay, whose team was badly outsized. "We tried fronting, fronting and backing. . .they were just too big."

The Cadets (16-7) advance to tomorrow's regional final, where they'll play Laurel, a 60-39 winner over Woodlawn in last night's other semifinal.

Frederick, the No. 4 seed, took advantage of its height time and again, lobbing the ball to Davis in the middle. The Lady Cadets worked their game plan to perfection in the second quarter, using their inside game to go on a 19-0 run that extended their lead to 31-12 near the end of the half.

After leading 13-12, Frederick connected on nine of its next 12 shots, while causing Dulaney (21-3) to misfire on its next 12. Davis led the onslaught with three layups and a host of rebounds during the stretch.

"Our major goal was to get it into the big girls -- me and Jolynn [Taylor]," Davis said. "I was worried going in because they were the top seed, but once I saw that they were only giving me single coverage I went to work."

Davis and Taylor had 16 rebounds each for the Cadets, as they out-rebounded Dulaney 36-21.

The Lions, led by forward Amy Lutrell (14 points) got as close as 50-40 in the fourth quarter, but could pull no closer.

"I was surprised," said Frederick coach Shelly Garner, whose team defeated Dulaney in the regional playoffs for the third consecutive year. "I guess they thought their big girl could handle our inside game. We did a good job getting to the middle."
