Hit-and-run driver dies in 2nd crash

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A hit-and-run driver fleeing an accident was killed last night when his car -- weaving without lights across the center line -- slammed head-on into another vehicle on Belair Road near Kingsville, according to a witness.

The driver of the second car, who was critically injured, was flown by a state police MedEvac helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The occupants of two other vehicles in a resulting chain-reaction of collisions apparently received minor injuries.

A witness, Richard L. Mattingly, 53, of Laurel, said he saw the first accident on U.S. 1 -- Belair Road -- when a southbound car struck the rear of another car stopped at a red light at the Sunshine Avenue intersection.

The southbound driver backed away, then fled south in the northbound lanes, according to Mr. Mattingly, who pursued the fleeing car at high speed to try to get its tag numbers. "He was weaving in and out of the northbound lane with his lights out," Mr. Mattingly said. "He would come back into the southbound lane to dodge oncoming cars and then pull back into the northbound lane."

Near Mount Vista Road, about two miles south of the first accident site, the fleeing car slammed into a northbound Cadillac. Two people in the other vehicles involved in the chain-reaction of accidents were treated for minor injuries at Fallston General Hospital.

Names of the victims were not immediately available, and police were continuing an investigation of the accidents early today.
