Melvin Johnston

Melvin Johnston, a World War II airman and retired Baltimore postal worker, died Saturday after a lengthy illness at his home in Flint, Texas. The Baltimore native was 80.

Services for Mr. Johnston were being held today at the Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas.

He attended City College before entering the military in World War II. Based in England, Mr. Johnston was a gunner and flew 52 missions over Germany.

Mr. Johnston, who played in soccer and baseball leagues, lived near Clifton Park after returning from the war.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Anna Hamby of Tyler, Texas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
