Norfolk adopts New Orleans-style festival

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The spectacular pageantry of a New Orleans' Mardi Gras celebration can be found in Norfolk, Va., on Saturday. The Waterside Festival Marketplace is the setting for festivities that begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue until 8 p.m.

Colorful banners and costumes, music and spicy Cajun cuisine are among the attractions at this third annual event. Revelers can join a New Orleans-style funeral procession as it winds through the marketplace with costumed characters, jugglers, clowns and stilt walkers as part of the entertainment. In addition, there will be a spring fashion show, ragtime and Dixieland music, and a wine tasting event with representatives from many of Virginia's top wineries.

There is no charge for the festival, but tickets for the wine tasting cost $10 for 16 tastings; $7 for eight; or 50 cents for one. The first two categories include a souvenir wine glass. Call (804) 627-3300.
