City woman, 33, arrested in fatal hit-and-run crash Damaged car found by police after wind blew off tarp.

A gust of wind blew a tarpaulin off a car, exposing damage and leading to the arrest of a city woman in connection with a hit-and-run accident last Friday in which a man was killed, police said.

Deanna Marie Deering, 33, of the 5700 block of Plainfield Ave., was arrested around 6 o'clock last night at the home of her parents in the 3800 block of Woodlea Ave., police said.

Officer Greg Taylor, a traffic investigator, said Ms. Deering was charged with moving violations and failing to stop and render aid in a personal injury accident.

Officer Taylor said a charge of vehicular manslaughter against Ms. Deering was pending a consultation today with the city state's attorney's office.

Ms. Deering was being held at the Women's Detention Center pending a bail hearing today before a District Court commissioner, said Officer Taylor.

Police said the car, a 1991 copper-colored Nissan Sentra, had been sought in the Valentine's Day death of George Richard Bittner, 31, of the 7800 block of Bon Air Road in Hillendale.

Mr. Bittner was struck by a northbound car while attempting to cross the 6100 block of Harford Road around 9:30 p.m. after bowling with friends, police said. On impact, Mr. Bittner was slammed against the car's windshield, they said.

The car spun around and headed south, causing Mr. Bittner to fall off, police said.

A witness followed the car but lost it when it ran a light at Glenmore Avenue.

Mr. Bittner died the next day at Francis Scott Key Medical Center.

Acting on a telephone tip, police found the car yesterday parked in the 5700 block of Plainfield Ave.

When an officer arrived there, he saw that a tarpaulin that covered the car had been nearly blown off by the wind, exposing extensive damage to the car's grille, hood, windshield and roof.

Shortly after the car was found, police located Ms. Deering at her parents' home and arrested her.
