Magic's NBA return limited to TV booth

Magic Johnson is coming back to the NBA -- as an announcer.

Johnson, who retired as a player in November after contracting the AIDS virus, will become an NBA commentator for NBC for the rest of the season. The former Los Angeles Lakers star will work on regular-season and playoff telecasts, including the NBA Finals.

Johnson has talked about a possible resumption of his NBA playing career, but the broadcasting job means that won't happen this season. His agent, Lon Rosen, said Johnson would evaluate his status after playing for the U.S. team at the Summer Olympics.

OC Johnson will broadcast the Lakers-Detroit Pistons game March 8.

College wrestling

Bill Ferencz (North Carroll) won, 3-1, with a takedown against Cary Huggard with 10 seconds left in their heavyweight match, and the University of Maryland (11-7-1, 3-2) edged Virginia, (4-7-1, 1-3), 20-17, in a dual meet in Charlottesville. Jim Novak of Virginia pinned Marc Papa at 177 to tie the team score at 15, and it remained tied after Kevin Brown of Maryland drew with Jeff Liebel, the third draw of the meet, at 190.
