Today's events

Speed skating: Gunda Niemann of Germany looks for a long-distance medal sweep in today's 5,000 meters after winning the 3,000 and taking silver in the 1,500.

Figure skating: French stars Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay moved into second place overall after the original dance, but they may not be able to overtake Russians Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko in tonight's final performance.

,10,9.5 Alpine skiing: Hilary Lindh, winner of the silver medal in the women's downhill, heads the American field in the women's super-G race. Also entered are Eva Twordokens, Diann Roffe and Julie Parisien.

Ice hockey: The U.S. must beat Sweden today to play France in the opening game of the medal round. Otherwise, the Americans would face Czechoslovakia tomorrow.

Yesterday

Ski jumping: Finland's Toni Nieminen flew into the record books as the youngest Olympic champion on the big hill.
