Dr. James J. Valdes, a scientific adviser for biotechnology at the U.S. Army Chemical Research Development and Engineering Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, has been selected to represent the Department of Defense at a biotechnology workshop in Europe.

The workshop, to be conducted in Dublin, Ireland, is a United States-European Economic Community sponsored event, titled "Methods for Improving the Communication of Biotechnology with the Public."

FOUNDATION CHAIRMAN

Jim Shaw, president of the Shaw Group, was named chairman of the Harford Community College Foundation Inc.

He will be assisted by Joan Ryder, of Joan Ryder & Associates, first vice chairperson; Jim Berger, plant manager at Clorox Co., second vice chairperson; Bill Acker, Alex Brown & Sons, is treasurer. Bruce Hegstad, president of the Chesapeake Beverage Corp. and outgoing chairman of the foundation board of directors, will serve as past chairman.

HOSPITAL VP PICKED

Robert S. Ross has been named vice president for operations at FallstonGeneral Hospital.

He has a master's degree in health services administration from the George Washington University and recently completed an administrative residency at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington.

Ross graduated cum laude from Brooklyn College in New York with a bachelor's degree in computer and information science. He previously served as a financial systems analyst for The CompuCare Co.

Active in professional associations, Ross is a member of the AmericanCollege of Healthcare Executives and the Healthcare Information and the Association of Healthcare Administrators of the National Capital Area.
