With austerity as the guiding principal, county social services administrators presented to the county commissioners Thursday their proposed spending plan for the coming fiscal year.

The county Department of Social Services is asking for $125,910 for fiscal year 1993, which begins July 1.

The request is 2 percent less than the amount originally allocated for the current budget year, said M. Alexander Jones, director of the Social Services Department.

The original 1992 allocation to thedepartment was $135,000, but that figure was trimmed to $128,000 in the wake of state cuts in aid to counties.

After several rounds ofcuts in state funding, the county reduced its overall spending for the current year by $6.6 million.

Last month, the county unveiled aproposed $116.4 million spending plan for the coming fiscal year.

Projected revenues are expected to come in about $1 million less, a deficit that administrators say will be resolved during upcoming budget work sessions.

County department heads have been asked by the commissioners to keep spending requests within levels originally allocated for the current year.

The commissioners are in the process ofreceiving budget proposals from all county departments and agencies.

Representatives of each department will return for their work sessions with the commissioners next month.

A final budget and tax rate are expected to unveiled by the commissioners in early April.

The Social Services Department administers 19 various state and federal programs that serve county residents.

About 2.5 percent of the department's approximately $5 million annual budget comes from the county.

The county support pays for needs not met by state and federal funding, such as clerical support, transportation aid and the hiring of additional caseworkers.

On Tuesday, the proposed budgets willbe submitted by the departments of Citizens Services, Human Resources and Administrative Services.

Budget sessions also are set for the Humane Society and Human Services Programs Inc.
