Dance ensemble to perform 'Distant Voices'

The Judy Dworin Performance Ensemble of Hartford, Conn., will perform "Distant Voices Coming Near," a dance-theater work, for five performances beginning Thursday at the Theatre Project, 45 W. Preston St.

Dworin's work emphasizes social, environmental and women's issues. In "Distant Voices," which features the choreographer along with four other ensemble members, movement is used to symbolize the link between human and animal. Performance times are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with a matinee at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 to $15. For more information call (410) 752-8558.

@ Cole Porter wrote the most sophisticated and debonair songs in the history of American music. And Wednesday at 6 p.m. the Friends of the Johns Hopkins University Libraries are offering an opportunity to enjoy Porter's music in the 100th year of his birth and to support a good cause.

The Friends of the Library have enlisted soprano Ruth Drucker, baritone Steven Scheinberg and pianist Ann Saslav to perform a benefit recital of works from Eisenhower Library's Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music. , one of the finest such collections in the United States.

The concert will be held in Shriver Hall. Tickets are priced between $10 and $50. All proceeds benefit the Johns Hopkins University libraries. For tickets and further information, call (410) 516-8327.

Stephen Wigler Some of the world's top professional ice skaters will join with some of the world's best-known cartoon characters when the latest edition of the Ice Capades comes to the Baltimore Arena for nine shows Wednesday through next Sunday.

Among those scheduled to perform are Catarina Lindgren, four-time Swedish women's skating champion in the early 1980s, and her husband Tom Dickinson; Russian pairs champions Elena and Vladimir Bogolioubov, and world professional champions Kristan Lowery and Chip Rossbach. They will be joined by the Flinstones, Yogi Bear and Scooby-Doo.
