For the third straight season, Carver clinched first place in the Maryland Scholastic Association B Conference Division II as the host and No. 10 Bears defeated No. 15 City, 76-64, yesterday.
Carver (14-3, 11-1) will be host to a conference semifinal this month against the second-place finisher in Division I. The Bears have won the past two MSA B Conference titles.
Senior forward Michael Richardson paced the Bears with a game-high 31 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior guard Shannon Fair added 11 and six assists.
"We started slow," said Carver coach Durce Jackson. "But Michael picked up the slack and the bench really played well when we had foul problems."
City (13-5, 8-4), which has clinched second place in Division II and will play Edmondson in the other semifinal, was led by 14 apiece from senior forward Corey Robinson and senior center Samuel Johnson.
No. 9 Edmondson (12-4, 10-2) clinched first place in Division I with a 74-54 victory over visiting and No. 18 McDonogh (10-6, 7-5).
Maurice Blanding scored a game-high 24 for Edmondson. Devin Ross added 14 and Randolph Edison 11.
McDonogh is tied with Mervo -- a 72-56 winner over Douglass -- for second place in the division. Tomorrow, Mervo will visit Carver and McDonogh plays host to Douglass. If both teams win, McDonogh would claim second based on its two victories over the Mustangs, and would advance to a conference semifinal against Carver.
