Carter Manasco, 90, a former Democratic congressman from Alabama and later legislative counsel to the National Coal Association, died Wednesday.He served in the House from 1941 to 1949.

Herman "Junior" Cook, 57, a tenor saxophonist who played with Freddie Hubbard and the Blue Mitchell Quintet, died of cirrhosis in New York Feb. 2. The Pensacola, Fla., native played with the Horace Silver Quintet from 1958-1964, Blue Mitchell from 1964-1969 and with Hubbard from 1973-1975.
