Non-profit building group elects officers, directors
Thomas S. Bozzuto, a real estate developer who heads Bozzuto & Associates, has been named president of the Baltimore Corp. for Housing Partnerships, one of the most active non-profit builders of affordable housing in Baltimore.
Other newly elected officers and directors of the 8-year-old corporation include: Mark Pollak of Piper & Marbury, first vice president; Floyd Grayson of Grayson Homes, vice president; and Sue Wilson of the accounting firm of Reznick Fedder Silverman, secretary-treasurer. Patricia Massey is the executive vice president.
Eight new members of the group's 36-member board are developer Elinor Bacon of Bacon & Co.; Kevin Cashin, a vice president of Signet Bank; Frank Coakley, executive vice president of Baltimore's Community Finance Development Corp.; Thomas Hobbs, vice president of SCA Realty Inc.; Ron Huffman, vice president of Chase Bank of Maryland; Karen Kollias of Maryland National Bank; developer Betty Jean Murphy of Savannah Development Corp.; and Patricia Payne, deputy secretary of Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development.
Havre de Grace
Seeking to lure first-time homebuyers while interest rates are low, A & M Properties of Havre de Grace has opened a community there that features detached homes with town home prices.
Chapel Heights is the name of the 20-unit community, which includes ranch-style homes, bi-level homes and Cape Cod bungalows with 960 to 1,182 square feet of space. Prices range from $85,000 to $105,000.
Headed by Allen Fair and Mary Lynn Snyder, A & M has a sales center open at 614 Chapel Heights Drive on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
The city of Baltimore will receive $1.1 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help fund two projects, rehabilitation of a 320-unit apartment complex in West Baltimore and continuing aid to homeless families.
Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke announced recently that HUD's Rental Rehabilitation Program is lending $600,000 for the rehabilitation of the 30-year-old Forest Park Apartments complex in the 5100 block of Oaklawn Road and the 4800 to 5000 blocks of Carmine Ave.
The federal funds will be coupled with a $500,000 loan from Signet Bank and a $450,000 Energy Conservation Loan Program from city bond funds to complete the $2 million project. The Relocation Housing Corp. is the owner of the property, where monthly rents will range from $265 to $387 after the work is complete.
Mayor Schmoke said HUD also has agreed to provide $500,000 over the next three years to support the city's ongoing efforts to aid homeless people.
He said one of its most recent projects is the temporary conversion of the former Engine Co. No. 7 fire station at Eutaw Street and Druid Hill Avenue to a temporary homeless shelter for up 25 people.
* James W. Rouse, former chairman of the Enterprise Foundation, will deliver an address titled "Who Speaks for the Poor?" Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon as part of the Community Planning Program of the University of Maryland's Department of Urban Studies and Planning. The talk is free and open to the public. It will be held in Room 2-W11 of the university's School of Social Work, 525 W. Redwood St.
* The Society of Fells Point and Federal Hill will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a party at Francie's Restaurant, 1629 Thames Street in Fells Point, on Feb. 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person, and reservations can be made through the society at 675-6756.
* Baltimore's Home Ownership Institute will sponsor a series of free home-buying seminars at the Enoch Pratt Central Library, 400 Cathedral St., over the next few months.
