It's tax season again, and state officials are warning people to beware of unscrupulous tax return preparers.
"While the majority of tax preparers in Maryland are honest, competent professionals, taxpayers should shop for professional tax services just as they would for the services of a doctor or lawyer," said Louis L. Goldstein, the state comptroller.
To avoid problems, Mr. Goldstein advises taxpayers to:
* Get references for preparers. Make sure preparers have kept up with changes in tax laws.
* Avoid a preparer who promises a refund before seeing your records.
