After a brief one-week stay in Colorado Springs, Colo., 1991 Tour ofSomerville winner Brian Moroney of Ellicott City found out on the last day that he was named to the U.S. Cycling Federation's "B" Squad.

Although the "B" team is less prestigious than the Federation's "A" team, Moroney said there are many pluses.

"The "B" team makes its own decisions, and can do what it wants to do," he said. "For me to be in this position is where I want to be."

Being named to the national team will open virtually every prestigious road race that he would want to enter and could add to his list of sponsors, Moroney said.

As Moroney sees it, the selection came down to the national team coach finding out about the most noted win of his young career.

"He said 'Oh, I didn't know you won Somerville.' My former coach also had a talk with him. Apparently, that was enough. It was instrumental for getting me on the 'B' team," Moroney said.

Moroney also is a member of two other racing teams: the Healthshare team based in Weymouth, Mass., and his Belgian racing team, Team Zanussi.

Moroney travels to Belgium this month for six months of racing in Europe. He will take a break in June to compete in the Olympic trials that will be held June 11-21 at Altoona, Pa.
