Professor Stephen Leatherman of the University of Maryland expressed his expert views on the beach replenishment program at Ocean City. This prompted Gov. William Donald Schaefer to say to him, "You may think you're totally independent [at the university], but you're not." But he is. If academic freedom means anything, it means a professor at a state university says what he believes, not what a political officer tells him to say.
Universities can lose accreditation over things like this. If the governor wants to believe oceans don't wash away dunes or the Earth is flat or whatever, that's his business. What professors teach students or anyone else is not.
