Jewish cemetery in Halethorpe vandalized

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Vandals overturned 130 tombstones at a Jewish cemetery in Halethorpe, causing property damage estimated at $50,000, according to Baltimore County police.

W. Leroy Acree, who has been caretaker of United Hebrew Cemetery in the3900 block of Washington Boulevard for 14 years, said it was the seventh time he could recall that vandals had damaged the 40-acre cemetery.

"It's one of those things that happen with all cemeteries," Mr. Acree said. "You can't stop it unless you put canines out there around-the-clock, and you can't do that with the public visiting the cemetery."

The cemetery is located near the Beltway.

The vandalism was reported to police yesterday. Police said it apparently occurred sometime Sunday afternoon.

Some of the damaged grave sites date to 1888.

Police said they had no suspects.
