Encore to celebrate with 'Black Girl'

In celebration of Black History Month, Encore Theater will showcase the African-American theater drama "Black Girl."

"Black Girl," written b J.E. Franklin, first appeared on Broadway in 1971. It is about a young dancer who struggles to find a better life and receives no support from her family. The play emphasizes the importance of family support.

The cast features youths from age groups ranging from 5 to 11 and 12 to 18 years old. "This teaches them ensemble work and allows them to work with one another," said Belva Scott, the artistic director.

Encore Theater has been in operation for six years and is now located in the Forest Park Senior Center complex at 4801 Liberty Heights Ave. The theater holds 350 people and there is free parking.

"Black Girl" will be shown from Feb. 14 through Feb. 23. For reservations, call 466-2433.
