The Taneytown deli, known for its 6-foot subs and overstuffed sandwiches, has been in business since 1947 and is a favorite of the locals. Businessmen and people who want a catered party are also loyal customers.
The place is small -- there's no seating -- but it has a big menu, and you get a lot for your money. A favorite of mine is the wonderful cole slaw (90 cents for a half-pound).
It seems everyone's favorite is the chicken salad and bacon super sandwich ($3.90). Like most delis, there are some cute names on the menu. The Jawbreaker, for example, features corned beef, breast of turkey, roast beef, cole slaw and Thousand Island dressing on four slices of bread ($5.15).
The deli has fresh salads, and hearty breakfasts in the $3 range.
If you're feeding more than a few, think about those 6-foot subs. They come with the works: roast beef, corned beef, turkey, Swiss and American cheeses, imported ham, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes -- all sitting on specially-baked, light-textured bread. This giant can be trimmed with your choice of extras, and served with side dishes of cole slaw, potato and macaroni salads.
I've been in the shop when they are making this biggie sandwich and I can assure you it looks like it will feed 30 or 35 people. It's great for picnics and quick meals, company coming at the last minute. And for the $84.95 price tag, they will deliver the thing (depending, of course, where you live).
