First Florida trip reaps 2 more Terps recruits COLLEGE FOOTBALL

The University of Maryland, in its first recruiting campaign through Florida, has received two more oral commitments. Brent Schrode, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound offensive lineman, and Dee Reed, a 6-2, 210-pound quarterback, have said they will attend Maryland.

Schrode, from Apopka High in Orange County, was recruited by Michigan State and Georgia Tech. Reed, from Pasco County High in Dade City, threw for more than 1,400 yards last season. Reed also could be moved to another position because of his versatility.

Maryland also has received commitments from two other Florida players -- offensive lineman Matt Davenport (6-4, 265) of Tallahassee High and wide receiver Al Wallace (6-4, 210) of Spanish River High in Boca Raton. Maryland lost out on Andy Crowe (6-4, 250) of Tallahassee, who has said he will sign with Florida State.

Part of Maryland's success in the state can be attributed to Florida State's joining the Atlantic Coast Conference and to Maryland's new recruiting coordinator, Kyle Lingerfelt, being a 1983 graduate of Florida State.

The rest of the 11 players who are known to have committed to Maryland are offensive linemen Erik Greenstein (6-2, 265) from Andover (Mass.) High; Aaron Henne (6-5, 240) of Shaler High outside of Pittsburgh; linebacker/strong safety Abu Whittaker (6-5, 205) of Perry Traditional Academy near Pittsburgh; quarterback Kevin Foley (6-2, 190) and tight end Erik Henry (6-4, 220), both from Cherry Hill (N.J.) East High; wide receiver Kevin Walker (5-10, 155) of Cinnaminson High in New Jersey; and fullback/linebacker Lovett Purnell (6-3, 200) from Valley Forge (Pa.) Military Academy.

Two players from Fork Union Prep in Virginia, inside linebacker Tim Brown (6-1, 215) and lineman Duane Ashman (6-4, 245), are expected to visit Maryland this weekend. The early recruiting signing date begins Wednesday.
