About 90 percent of Americans drink orange juice at least once a week for breakfast, but only 76 percent drink it regularly at other times during the day, according to a recent survey by the Florida Department of Citrus.
The survey, by Beaumont Palmer & Co., was conducted to see how consumers view orange juice in their diet and when they're most likely to drink it. Orange is by far the top juice choice for breakfast. (The top beverage choice for breakfast is coffee and/or tea, with 48 percent choosing one of these.)
Overall, though, consumption of juice, milk, coffee and tea is declining, while soft-drink consumption is rising.
Results from the survey showed that 62 percent of people reach for a caffeine-containing drink for an energy boost during the day, even though only 2 percent think such drinks are good for them. At the same time, 66 percent say they know that orange juice is a high-energy drink.
Dan Gunter, executive director of the Florida Department of Citrus, says, "That is a behavioral peculiarity the industry clearly must address."
