Chicago Cubs -- Announced a tentative agreement to buy the Rockford Expos of the Class A Midwest League. Agreed to one-year contracts with P Greg Maddux (15-11, 3.35 ERA) for $4.2 million and OF Dwight Smith (.228, 3 HRs, 21 RBI) for $450,000, respectively. Maddux had been seeking $4.4 million in arbitration; the club had offered $3.65 million. Smith had sought $500,000; the club had offered $375,000.
Cincinnati Reds -- Designated C Troy Afenir for reassignment.
Los Angeles Dodgers -- Agreed to one-year contracts with P Jay Howell (6-5, 3.18 ERA, 16 saves) for $2,575,000 and IF Jeff Hamilton (out most of last season with a torn knee ligament) for $497,500, respectively. Howell had asked for $2.75 million in arbitration; the Dodgers had offered $2.4 million. Hamilton had asked for $545,000; the Dodgers had offered $450,000. Agreed to a one-year contract with IF Mike Sharperson (.277, 2 HRs, 20 RBI).
New York Mets -- Agreed to a one-year contract with C Charlie O'Brien (.195, 2 HRs, 14 RBI) for a $370,000, one-year contract. O'Brien had asked for $450,000 and was offered $285,000.
San Diego Padres -- Signed P Randy Myers (6-13, 3.55 with the Cincinnati Reds) to a one-year contract for $2.35 million. He had asked for $2.7 million; the club had offered $2.05 million.
